this is cool because at a quick glance anyone can see that or at least guess that this map of the United States has something to temperature or climate around the country. i like the vibrant colors that match each area too.

Week 10 submission

Geocommons.com is a site that i found last week. i think that this is a good site for everyone to use. the information is presented in a easy format and is nicely labeled. Although you have to make an account to access most of its information i think its quite useful.

Radiohead’s most recent music video, House of Cards, was made entirely without cameras. Instead the setup involved a rotating scanner, lasers, and lots of 3D data. The music video is all of that 3D data rendered.

No cameras or lights were used. Instead two technologies were used to capture 3D images: Geometric Informatics and Velodyne LIDAR. Geometric Informatics scanning systems produce structured light to capture 3D images at close proximity, while a Velodyne Lidar system that uses multiple lasers is used to capture large environments such as landscapes. In this video, 64 lasers rotating and shooting in a 360 degree radius 900 times per minute produced all the exterior scenes.

I thought this was really cool. It proves that data can be used for more than reading purposes. Whatever data they used is almost irrelevant because they used it in a way thats for pure entertainment.

week 5 submission

In visual complexity the author talks about how cities are doomed to fail because of the way they are set up with the busy city surrounded by the suburbs and the rural areas. I think they’re wrong about it failing because this is the natural way for cities to develop and until something better comes along this is how they’ll develop. You can see in the picture of some city that has its suburbs around it, you can tell by the lights.

even though i dont know what this map trying to show its audience, i think a lot of different things can be done with this. i like that the arcs have different heights so we can tell which path is longer say for an air flight. also the colors on the countries can be changes so that certain colors mean different densities in the major cities of the world. although it may be hard to see for the entire glow especially on the northern parts of the world, i think that this is a creative way to show different patterns and densities around the world.

week 2 assignment

i dont like the way this map of europe and the middle east is made. i think that the colors are too similar in the same region and most of the countries names are overlapped or unseen due to color or other countries names. Instead of doing this information this way they couldve actually gotten a map and showed the colors within the borders of the country

discussion week 1

This is a photo of the Verizon coverage across America. This visually shows us how much of the united states that this service actually covers. through data collection and clever presentation, this map shows us that verizon is a great choice for the country east of north dakota to texas.

this map of the world shows the Facebook connections around the world. i think this is really cool because the one social network illuminates almost the entire world so that most of the countries are visible. I really like how this data is presented because the high contras attracts the eye and leads a person more curious as to what it is. also the way the information is presented, it doesn’t need an explanation as to what it is, just the picture explains what the compiled data is about.
